About JFIF File Format

JFIF (JPEG File Interchange Format) is a more advanced image format that contains extra information apart from the features of .JPG and .JPEG image formats. At its simplest, it can be called an enhanced / upgraded version. You can usually open a JFIF file with any program that displays JPG images. JPEG files can be saved to JFIF by default in Windows 11 and this is usually not a problem. However, sometimes different programs cannot define this format and will not open the file, giving an error even though the content contains a standard JPG.

About JPEG File Format

JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is a widely used file format for compressing and storing digital images. It is a lossy compression format, meaning that it achieves high compression ratios by discarding some of the image data during compression. The compression reduces the file size significantly while maintaining an acceptable level of image quality. JPEG is commonly used for photographs, digital camera images, and web graphics due to its efficient compression algorithm. It supports millions of colors and can handle complex images with smooth color transitions. However, since it is a lossy format, repeated editing and saving of JPEG images can result in a gradual loss of image quality due to the compression artifacts accumulating over time.
